UGCC Patriarch Sviatoslav urged against voting for priests running for deputies

31.05.2021, 13:10

In his report "The Gift of Freedom", which the head of the UGCC Sviatoslav delivered at the "Obnova-Fest" in Chernivtsi, the patriarch mentioned the role of the Church in the public life of Ukrainian society. The first hierarch noted that priests cannot become deputies.

This is reported by molbuk.ua.

"In the modern world, when we talk about the social doctrine of the Catholic Church, we are talking about the partnership between the church and society. The Church should always remain with its people and be part of civil society. It is possible to generate responsible politicians, responsible builders of the state apparatus. But the Church as an entity can never take over those functions," His Beatitude Sviatoslav emphasized.

The Patriarch urged not to vote for priests who decided to run for deputies.

"Therefore, we sometimes have certain disciplinary problems with some of our priests who want to be MPs. Never vote for a priest who is running for deputy or MP. Do you hear that? Never! Why? Because, first of all, he does not obey His Own Church - how will he obey you?" said the head of the UGCC.
