Meeting with the authorities of the National Committee of Soviet Jews on 1 October 2002, Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma stressed that Ukraine will make every possible effort towards the renewal and development of national minorities, and, in particular, the Jewish community of Ukraine.
The problem of the restitution of property to the Jewish community was also touched upon during the discussion. President Kuchma emphasized that Ukraine considers the transfer of places of worship and religious buildings to religious organizations an act of historical justice. Today, synagogue buildings are gradually being returned to the Ukrainian Jewish community. Out of 109 former synagogues, 55 have already been transferred to their legitimate owners.
