UOC MP wants Pan-Orthodox Council

12.11.2021, 09:05

The Pan-Orthodox Council will save world Orthodoxy from the crisis. This was stated by Metropolitan Anthony (Pakanich), chancellor of the UOC-MP, during the International Conference on "Conciliarity of the Church: Theological, Canonical and Historical Dimensions" on November 11, 2021, in Kyiv. He also said that primacy in the Ecumenical Church, as it is interpreted in the Patriarchate of Constantinople, is "unacceptable".

"The doctrine of primacy in the Ecumenical Church, which is formulated by the theologians of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, is unacceptable for us. This teaching has become a serious threat to the unity of world Orthodoxy. The implementation in practice of such an understanding of primacy leads to the undermining of the Conciliar foundation of church administration," Metropolitan Anthony said in his speech.

"Today we need to return to the Apostolic understanding of church councils as special means of knowing Divine Truth. We must remember that it is in councils that the grace of the Holy Spirit works in a special way, guiding the church to the truth. And today, when the Orthodox Church is in a severe crisis, we need to resort to this saving tool without fear and with full responsibility in order to find a way out of a difficult situation," Anthony said.
