UPA Soldier. Virtual Vertep Vision

14.11.2025, 21:12

Virtual Vertep Vision is a series of articles and videos dedicated to each character of the traditional Ukrainian Vertep. Created as part of the project “BoykoTravel: Vertep PreServes Ukraine”, implemented with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation.

A wondrous joy has risen, one never seen before,

For UPA has found its leader — “Chuprynka” to the fore.

We beg Thee, Lord Jesus, each hour and every day:

Help him drive the occupiers from Ukraine far away.

(Ukrainian Insurgent Army carol)

The Vertep has always been a living mirror of its time. So when Ukraine, in the 20th century, once again fought for its statehood, a new hero naturally appeared – the Soldier of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). He is the direct heir of the Cossack-Zaporozhian warrior.

The UPA Soldier in the Vertep is a symbol of the unbroken spirit. Like the Cossack in classical performances, he serves as a liberator in the secular part of the drama, a guardian of the Holy Night. But his lines are not humorous – they are prophetic: a prayer and an oath at once. His presence beside angels, shepherds, and kings reminds us that Christmas is also the birth of hope for a people struggling for freedom.

His clothing corresponds to the uniform of Ukrainian insurgents of the 1940s–1950s: a gray or green field coat, mazepynka cap with trident, belt, rifle slung over the shoulder, boots, and sometimes leather bandoliers. In his hands – a blue-and-yellow flag or the Vertep Star, symbolizing the ongoing struggle of light against darkness.

His speech is solemn, filled with dignity. He addresses the people not as a stage actor to spectators, but as a warrior to his nation:

Do not grieve, our people, we pledge here today,

We will build freedom and glory for Ukraine one day.

The UPA Soldier in the Vertep reminds us: the defense of our freedom is an inseparable part of our story – even within the sacred context of Christmas. Introducing this character into the Vertep is an act of historical justice – and the affirmation of national memory.

Blue and yellow flag — Ukraine’s golden plain,

Communism shall never rule this land again.
