Ancient print edition of The Apostle by Ivan Fedorov stolen from Vernadskyy library

The Apostle printed by Ivan Fedorov in 1574, disappeared on May 10 from the Ancient And Rare Books Section of the National Library of Ukraine named after VI Vernadskyy. This was stated by Director of Vernadskyy National Library Volodymyr Popik, Radio Liberty reports.

According to him, the criminal proceedings were instituted.

“We are in contact with the investigation but I will not disclose details,” he said.

Meanwhile, the press service of the Main Department of the National Police in Kyiv reported that the claim regarding the disappearance of the ancient book from the library was not submitted.

According to the head of the Museum of Rare Books of Nizhyn Gogol State University Olexandr Morozov, the Ministry of Culture received warnings about the possibility of abduction of old print editions.

“Among the preserved publications this book is a rare one. Therefore the theft should be disclosed to public to draw closer attention to keeping rare literature,” he added.
