Archbishop Avhustyn of Lviv Asks Supreme Council Not to Dismiss National Committee on Public Morality

Archbishop Avhustyn (Markevych) of Lviv and Halych, head of the Theological and Canonical Committee of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, asked the Supreme Council not to dismiss the National Committee on Matters of Public Morality. The hierarch sent the address to the head of the parliament, Volodymyr Lytvyn, reports religion.in.ua.   
According to the archbishop, “The National Committee, according to the Memorandum № 01-ОМ on cooperation with the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations of 16.12.2008, created certain possibilities  to ensure the morality of the society, prevent the propaganda of violence, cruelty, pornography, interethnic hatred, disrespect for religious shrines, took steps to protect the society from the spread of information that has a negative effect on public morality, etc.”
  
Therefore, Archbishop Avhustyn expressed support for the activity of the national committee and said that the measures taken by it “are necessary and urgent.”
  
The National Committee on Matters of Public Morality was liquidated by a presidential decree. The All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations have appealed to the president to resume its activity.
