The International Union of Superiors General (UISG) calls on religious communities and all the faithful to join in a worldwide Day of Fasting and Prayer for Peace.
This was reported by Vatican News.
This day of prayer and fasting falls on August 14, the eve of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In their appeal, the nuns emphasize that this year’s prayer intentions will focus on the situations in Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine, Haiti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Syria, and Myanmar.
“As women of peace, present in the peripheries of the world and immersed in the suffering of humanity,” the UISG Sisters declare, “we feel the urgent need to raise our voices, unite our hearts, pray and take action.”
On this day, the superiors call for deeper prayer over the Word of God in light of current wars and crises. They urge actions that promote justice and reconciliation, as well as concrete gestures of solidarity, particularly through participation in networks of hospitality and humanitarian aid for those who are suffering. The appeal also highlights the importance of encouraging both ecclesiastical and civil authorities to pursue peace, disarmament, and the protection of human rights.
“We cannot wait. Peace must be built — and it must be built together,” the superiors emphasize, concluding their appeal with the words: “With Mary, Mother of Hope, the Sisters unite in prayer, and in witness.”
