Ecologists Ask Metropolitan To Halt Church Pollution

The civic ecological organization “Green World of Bukovyna” has asked Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate, to interfere and stop the pollution on the territory of the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in the southwestern Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi. This news was reported by the news agency “Political Ukraine” on 22 October 2002.

“Even during Soviet times, when the cathedral was occupied by an exhibition hall, it was properly maintained… Today, the flowerbeds have been destroyed and instead, a parking lot has been put there. There are also garbage and construction materials near the cathedral. Because of the sidewalk-tile factory that operates in the neighborhood, there are piles of sand and gravel around,” reads the statement of the ecological organization. Numerous requests that “Green World of Bukovyna” sent to the eparchial authorities, asking to put the territory of the cathedral in order, were refused. Therefore, members of the organization hope that Metropolitan Volodymyr will help solve this problem and call for an appropriate attitude from the priests of his church towards the territory of Holy Spirit Cathedral in Chernivtsi.
