The first 20 patients of the Berezhany psychoneurological nursing home in Krasnopushcha of Ternopil Oblast were moved from the building of a Basilian Monastery, which is a monument of architecture of the 18th-20th centuries, Volodymyr Boianovych, the director of the institution, reported to RISU.
After 20 years of delay the monastery is being returned to its original owners, the monks. For years, the local officials refused to even talk about the possibility of moving the institution, referring to lack of funds. Numerous addresses of the believers and Basilian monks to the Ternopil Regional State Administration, Cabinet of Ministers, State Committee on Nationalities and Religions, Supreme Council and even Ukraine’s president proved fruitless. The present president did not respond to the citizens at all. Neither did the representative office of UN in Ukraine. The government redirected the addresses to the regional level.
The situation changed in 2011. On the basis of the results of the work of the Temporary Committee of the Ternopil Regional Council headed by Maria Chashka, 200 thousand hryvnias were allocated from the local budget to move the nursing home from the monastery.
