A statement by the German Conference of Catholic Bishops was announced by the Trier Bishop Stephan Ackermann, speaking at the opening of the regular session of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Lviv on 8 September.

Bishop Ackermann said that the Catholic Church in Germany supports Ukraine in its struggle for a free and fair country, "After 1991 when the Ukrainian state was formed, after the Orange Revolution in 2004, for the third time Ukrainians started the revolution of dignity in winter 2013/2014 striving for freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. "

The representative of the German episcopate also noted that during the revolution of dignity the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church gained the respect and recognition far beyond national borders Ukraine.

Spiritual and pastoral care of demonstrators in the Maidan will be remembered as its great merit.

Bishop Ackermann assured Ukrainian bishops that the Catholic Church in Germany will continue to support the Church in Ukraine. The role of the Catholic Church as "a major player in the construction of civil society" in Ukraine and its activities on psychological care of victims of war cannot be overemphasized, said the German bishops.

Since 1991, the diocese Trier, which is now headed by Stefan Ackermann, supports various projects of the Greek Catholic Church in Ukraine, including the development of the local Caritas and the Malteser.
