The leadership of the German Evangelical Lutheran Church is indignant and worried by the unprecedented use of aggression by the Ukrainian authorities in connection with the events that have been taking place for 23 days now on the Maidan in the center of Kyiv.

As stated in their official statement, sent to RISU, the greatest concern is the fact that the government is acting against its own people, ignoring the signing of the International Convention on Human Rights.

“We as a church are not judges and should not have to make decisions about the political legitimacy of the arguments of any side. But we are worried about the trouble for the world and the common good in Ukraine. Therefore, we advise those involved, especially the government, not to use force and urge them to take the necessary steps to gain real credibility and to start a serious mutually respectable dialogue about the future of Ukraine,” reads the statement.

The Lutherans again urged the authorities not to use any violence, because this method cannot lead to the right policy choices.
