The decision to recognize the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people was made on Thursday, March 23, by the Icelandic parliament.
This was reported by MP Maria Mezentseva, according to Gazeta.ua.
"We are very much looking forward to the Council of Europe Summit in Reykjavik in May, where the heads of government of 46 countries will discuss the future special tribunal for the crime of Russian aggression and the compensation mechanism for losses caused by Russia. Iceland is standing with us on the path to justice," she said.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the Icelandic parliament.
"I am grateful to Iceland for recognizing the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as a genocide of the Ukrainian people, for honoring the memory of millions of Ukrainians killed by the Moscow regime. This is a clear message: such crimes do not go unpunished. And they don't have a statute of limitations," Zelensky said.
In February, Bulgaria recognized the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people. Last year, a similar decision was made by the German parliament.
During the Holodomor of 1932-1933, more than 7 million Ukrainians died in the territory of the Ukrainian SSR and 3 million abroad − in the Kuban, North Caucasus, lower Volga region and Kazakhstan.
