Jews of Odessa prepare to celebrate Purim
On Wednesday evening, February 28, on the 14th day of the month Adar by the Jewish calendar, the Jews of Odessa, together with the whole Jewish world, will begin to celebrate the merry Purim Festival. Spokesman of the Jewish community of Odessa Berl Kapulkin told it to Depo.Odesa.
At 18:15 in the synagogue on 21 Osipova str., the first reading of the scroll of Esther will begin as it should be, with clatter and chatter and carnival costumes.
After the reading, the youth will move to the concert hall of the Marlin Hotel (13 Polsky Spusk) where the PurimHype holiday program will be presented.
On Thursday, March 1, at 09:30 in the synagogue, the second of the obligatory scroll readings will take place, then the parishioners of the synagogue will hand over to each other the mishloach manos, and at 17:00, a great celebratory Purim meal will begin (the one storied in legends and jokes).
Background. Purim is a Jewish feast, set in memory of the salvation of Persian Jews from being exterminated by Aman, a favorite of the Persian king Ahasuerus (Xerxes, in the 5th century BC).
Jewish woman Esther, who was taken in the harem of the king, through the mediation of the Jew Mordecai became his beloved prisoner, and then his wife. When she learned about the plans of Haman to destroy the Jews, she contributed to the Jewish uprising, during which, over one night, about 75,000 non-Jewish people were killed throughout the kingdom.
