August 11 is the first day of Ramadan – the sacred month of fasting for the whole Islamic world. During this month Muslims try to do more good deeds, to refrain from sin, to adhere to religious rituals, to read the Quran more, and to pray more. Special attention is given to the Mohammedan prayer Tarawa, which is read at night only during this month, explained Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Ukraine.
This year Quran readers from the Islamic university Al-Azhar (Cairo, Egypt) are invited to read the Quran at the Kyiv mosque Al-Rahma and other mosques in Ukraine. Guests from South Africa are invited to participate in the celebration of Ramadan.
Traditionally every evening after the sunset in every mosque in Ukraine iftars – the holiday dinner that everybody can visit – are held. Each day of fasting will end with a dinner in the Kyiv mosque of the particular national cuisine: Ukrainian, Azerbaijan, Dagestan, Chechen, Tatar, Tunisian, Algerian, Uzbek, Turkmen, Tajik, Pakistan.
