New Verkhovna Rada liquidates Committee on Culture and Spirituality
The Verkhovna Rada of the 9th convocation liquidated the parliamentary Committee on Culture and Spirituality at the first plenary session on Thursday, August 29, as it became known from the adopted Resolution No. 1077.
The bill passed with 299 votes in favor and 36 votes against, with 19 abstentions, while 45 did not vote.
The Committee on Culture and Spirituality functioned in all previous convocations of the Verkhovna Rada from the beginning of Independence, and had the same name, except for the first convocation, in which it was called "Committee on Culture and Spiritual Revival".
This Committee was involved in the preparation of bills and was meant to control the following areas:
cultural and educational activities (publishing and library business, cinematography, folk arts and crafts);
creative activity (creative associations, theaters, schools of aesthetic education, concert and tour activities);
protection of historical and cultural heritage (museum and archive business, activity of reserves, export, import and return of cultural values);
state policy in the field of religion;
state policy on the language issue;
charity issues.
In the previous convocation of the Verkhovna Rada, the Committee structure incorporated the subcommittee on state policy in the field of freedom of conscience and religious organizationswhich was chaired by Ukrainian religious scholar Viktor Yelensky.
In the current convocation of the Parliament, religious issues were transferred under the responsibility of the Committee for Humanitarian and Information Policy, which was led by the representative of the Servant of the People faction, the General Director of the TV channel 1+1 Oleksandr Tkachenko.
It was not yet known whether a subcommittee on religious issues would be established as part of that Committee, since that decision would be made by the committee members themselves. Overall, the Committee will have 17 MPs onboard, and the majority required for the decision-making will be from the presidential faction.
The new Committee will be responsible for the family matters. It is referred to the family and marriage relations, the establishment of the family, the provision of state assistance to families with children and the protection of neglected homeless children.
