The President has stressed that non-recognition of the Holodomor is as immoral as the denial of the Holocaust.

President Petro Poroshenko announces the need to pass a law on the introduction of responsibility for not recognizing the Holodomor and the Holocaust. Poroshenko has said this today during the mournful events on the occasion of the Holodomor Victims Day.

“Our descendants must always remember that it was not just an artificially created famine but a carefully planned famine - the Holodomor. Moreover, it is a genocide by all means, as defined in the UN Convention of December 9, 1948,” he said.

“I think it's time and we have to pass a law on the responsibility for not recognizing these two horrific tragedies in order that our descendants observed the law of Ukraine on the recognition of the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian nation,” he said.

Poroshenko has added that to date, 14 countries at the parliamentary level have also recognized the Holodomor of 1932-33 in Ukraine as genocide.
