The Hierarchical Council of the Ecumenical Patriarchate dispelled Moscow's illusion that Ukraine is a canonical territory of the Moscow Patriarchate, said Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko. It was reported by Interfax-Ukraine.

“The One Local Orthodox Church is the key to the public consent and unity of our State. It is a guarantee of our spiritual independence from Moscow which, unfortunately, is still of the false idea that our land is allegedly its canonical territory,” he said in Kyiv on Friday at the 15th Annual Meeting of the Yalta European Strategy, a summit organized by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation.

“And the September Synagogue, the assembly of the hierarchs of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, completely dispersed these false illusions of Moscow," Poroshenko added.

According to him, the issue of the provision of the Tomos of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is also important beyond Ukraine's borders.

“Ukrainians from all over the world will also receive their Church, and here's another key collapse of a house of cards -- the concept of the Third Rome, as Moscow's most ancient claim for world hegemony,” the Head of State said.

“Here also we are shaping the future of universal Orthodoxy – and we also differ in opinion with the Russians, ” said Poroshenko.
