On Tuesday, December 9, 2025, Pope Leo XIV welcomed Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, for an audience at his residence in Castel Gandolfo.
This was reported by Vatican News.
According to the Holy See Press Office, during their cordial conversation devoted to the war in Ukraine, the Pope reiterated the importance of ongoing dialogue and once again stressed his “urgent hope that ongoing diplomatic efforts will lead to a just and lasting peace.”
In addition, the two heads of state also spoke about the issue of prisoners of war, calling for the safe return of Ukrainian children to their families.
During the audience with Pope Leo XIV, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also invited the pontiff to visit Ukraine.
“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to His Holiness for his unwavering support of the children of Ukraine. I truly appreciate this conversation and the care he has shown for our people. I have extended an invitation for the Pope to visit Ukraine, as it would serve as a powerful message of solidarity for our nation,” the president wrote on Telegram.

This marks their third encounter, with their first meeting having occurred on May 18, immediately after the Holy Mass celebrating the official start of the pontificate.
