President Yanukovych stated that law on protection of cultural heritage in Ukraine is to be improved.

The law of Ukraine on the preservation of the cultural heritage needs complex improvement. In particular, it concerns the protection of valuable historic objects in the conditions of the increase of the scale of new construction.

“The law should clearly define the priority of the requirements of the protection of the cultural heritage over the city development activities. It should envisage the necessary range of legal, organizational, financial, economic, scholarly and other means of the protection thereof,” stated Ukraine’s President Viktor Yanukovych during a session of the Public Humanitarian Council.

The president also stressed that the level of protection and preservation of the objects of cultural heritage should be defined not only by the interests of the builders but also by the principles of the Conventions ratified by Ukraine.

“It is this position that should be taken into account in the process of defining the priorities of the state policy and preparation of appropriate alterations to the national law,” stressed the head of the state. So reported the presidential press-service.
