Rada passes the law criminalizing anti-Semitism

Verkhovna Rada has adopted a law establishing criminal liability for manifestations of anti-Semitism. It provides for amendments to Article 161 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

295 MPs voted for acceptance of the law in the second reading and in general. The law supplements Article 161 of the Criminal Code "Violation of equal rights of citizens depending on their race, nationality, religious beliefs, disability and other grounds" with the concept of "manifestations of anti-Semitism".

According to the document, such manifestations are punishable by a fine of two hundred to five hundred non-taxable minimum incomes of citizens (UAH 3400-8500) or restriction of liberty for a term of up to five years, with or without deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for a period of up to three years.

According to the Criminal Code, the same actions involving violence, deception or threats, as well as committed by an official, are punishable with a fine of five hundred to a thousand non-taxable minimum incomes of citizens ( UAH 8500-17000) or imprisonment for a term of two to five years, with or without deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for a period of up to three years.

Actions that were committed by an organized group of persons or entailed serious consequences are punishable with imprisonment for a term of five to eight years.
