On June 24, analyzing the television series Chernobyl on the ROC-owned TV-Channel Spas, the First Deputy Chairman of the Synodal Department for Church Relations with Society and Mass Media of the Moscow Patriarchate, member of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation, Alexander Shchipkov, stated that one of the main ideological tasks of the said series is to inflict reputational damage both on Russian technology and science in general, as well as on the nuclear industry as a whole, reports Religion in Ukraine citing Shchipkov’s website. This is reported by Religion in Ukraine.

Among the main themes of the series, Shchipkov noted the desire to depict Russian scientists and engineers as negligent. The very fact of the Chernobyl nuclear explosion should remind the whole world that Russian technology is unreliable, and it is extremely dangerous to use it. Shchipkov recalled that the State Corporation Rosatom has held for many years the world championship in the number of energy units of NPPs in a foreign portfolio of projects. This means that Russia today is actually the top seller of nuclear reactors abroad. After the accident at the Fukushima-1 NPP, where the American-made nuclear unit was installed, the demand for American nuclear units in the world fell sharply, said Shchipkov.

Foreign media are already publishing defamatory articles about the Russian nuclear industry, aimed at breaking the already concluded contracts, said Shchipkov in his speech.

“The one who protects this film in Russia - saws off a tree branch he is sitting on, steals money from the Russian budget and, as a result, from his own pocket. Therefore, showing this series on Russian television would be an act of treason,” summed up the Orthodox analyst.

As reported, the Chernobyl is a five-episode historical drama created by the American television channel HBO in cooperation with the British television network Sky that is dedicated to the Chornobyl nuclear power plant (Ukraine) disaster of 1986, dealing with the immediate consequences of this accident and investigation of its causes.

The premiere of Chernobyl took place on May 6, 2019 in the United States and on May 7, 2019 in the UK. The film has won acclaim of critics. According to IMDb user rating, Chernobyl has won the first place in the list of 250 best television series in history.
