A week-long visit by teams from Caritas Ukraine and Caritas Spes to Slovakia, initiated by the local Caritas network, has concluded. Representatives from Caritas parish organizations in Kherson, Beryslav, and Fastiv, along with members from the diocesan organizations in Stryi, Kolomyia, and Chernivtsi, participated in this trip.

This was reported by the UGCC Department for Information.

The main purpose of the meetings was to exchange experiences, discuss the challenges Ukraine is currently facing, and strengthen international support for those suffering as a result of the war. During their visit, the Ukrainian delegation toured Caritas offices and parishes in Slovakia, where they learned about the work of integration centers that provide psychological support, assistance, and language learning opportunities for Ukrainians.

The delegation also held meetings with Archbishop Jonáš Maxim, Metropolitan of the Slovak Greek Catholic Church, and with bishops from the Roman Catholic Church.

Participants noted that the expressions of support and solidarity with Ukraine from the Slovak bishops and communities were particularly significant. They emphasized that the Slovak people stand with Ukraine, recognize it as a victim of Russian aggression, and support the Ukrainians' right to seek a just peace.

The delegation members emphasized that the visit was not only an opportunity to learn from the Church’s social ministry in Slovakia, but also a chance to witness the harsh realities of war in Ukraine. They observed the suffering experienced by people in frontline towns and villages, as well as Caritas's daily efforts to support those grappling with loss, fear, and uncertainty.

“Such meetings are not just about partnership; they are about humanity, solidarity, and a shared commitment to stand by those who are enduring the pain of war,” highlighted Fr. Serhiy Tryfyak, director of Caritas of the Kolomyia Diocese.

Father Ihor Makar, director of Caritas-Kherson, noted the importance of sharing the extremely difficult situation in the Kherson region along the front lines, and he appreciated the support and prayers from the Slovak people for Ukraine.

“What I witnessed and experienced went beyond an official visit or a series of working meetings. We felt not only hospitality but also sincere love and care. I was genuinely moved by how deeply the Slovak people have been affected by Ukraine’s suffering, their eagerness to help, and how open their hearts are to Ukrainians who have been forced to leave their homes due to the war,” concluded Fr. Oleksandr Bilsky, director of Caritas-Beryslav.
