UNESCO did not add St. Cyril’s and Andrew’s churches of Ukraine to the World Heritage List. According to the press secretary of UNESCO Sue Williams, Ukraine did not give enough materials to the committee. “Thus, we gave the representatives from Ukraine more time to prepare the materials,” she added.

As informs the website Svidomo, the current session of UNESCO will also review the question of transferring St. Sophia Cathedral to the so-called “blacklist” – a list of properties that are in danger.

This problem was brought to attention after activists against construction in the historic part of Kyiv appealed to UNESCO with a letter describing the chaotic and unlawful construction in the buffer zone of the monuments.

At the 34th session of UNESCO only state officials will represent Ukraine. No representatives of the civil society will be present.

“If Ukraine ends up on the ‘blacklist,’ then it will join with such countries as Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria, Yemen, Congo, and other countries of the world that could not save their natural and historic monuments from ruination,” the message states.
