Synod of Kyivan Patriarchate Opposes Privatization of Pochayiv Monastery

The Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyiv Patriarchate (UOC-KP) of January 22 instructed Patriarch Filaret of the UOC-KP to address the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Volodymyr Rybak, with the request to prevent the privatization of the Pochayiv Monastery.

The Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyiv Patriarchate (UOC-KP) of January 22 instructed Patriarch Filaret of the UOC-KP to address the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Volodymyr Rybak, with the request to prevent the privatization of the Pochayiv Monastery.

According to the website of UOC-KP, the Primate addressed the bishops and informed them that a bill envisaging the transfer of shrines of the Ukrainian nation including the Pochayiv Monastery into private ownership has been submitted to the Parliament again.

The members of the Synod expressed their negative attitude to the bill and called any legislative initiatives of privatization of the national shrines unacceptable.

The bishops of the UOC-KP reminded that on May 13 they already considered similar bills and criticized them.
