Just a few weeks later, in May this year, the Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople will take place, where the Ukrainian church issue is likely to be considered. President of the Ukrainian Association of Religious Freedom, People's Deputy Viktor Yelenskyy was reported as saying this in a comment to Obozrevatel.

"While the Moscow Patriarchate is unwilling to solve the problem of millions of Ukrainians, holding them behind the fence, the Ecumenical Patriarch intervenes in this situation, and provides autocephaly to one side. This issue must be resolved in the near future at the Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, which will be held in May,” he said.

Victor Yelenskyy expressed hope that the decision will be in favor of Ukrainian autocephaly.

“I want to believe it. Let us believe in what the president said, and what his negotiators said,” the MP said.

As RISU has previously reported, yesterday, on April 17, Petro Poroshenko said he had submitted the appeal to the Ecumenical Patriarch regarding the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church and hopes that the next Synod of Constantinople will make a positive decision on this issue.

“I believe this decision will be adopted on the occasion of the 1030th  anniversary of the celebration of the Baptism of Rus-Ukraine,” the President said.
