Another Ukrainian historic site – the ancient city of Tauric Chersonese – has made it on the UNESCO World Heritage List, Ukrayinska Pravda reports.
“On Pentecost Ukraine received the news: in Cambodia the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO has inscribed our Chersonese World Heritage, a new Ukrainian nomination, on the World Heritage List,” said Minister of Culture of Ukraine Leonid Novohatko.
The decision to grant Tauric Chersonese World Heritage status was unanimous.
Tauric Chersonese has several protected areas that are part of the ancient settlement of Chersonesos and its agricultural hinterland (chora).
Chersonese, which existed from the 5th century BC to the 14th century AD, is the only example of archeological ruins of an ancient city still extant in its integrity in the Northern Black Sea area. Numerous archeological items dating from the ancient and medieval period have been excavated, including the street network, public buildings, religious constructions, and residential quarters.
