The Conference of European Churches is asking all its member churches to offer special prayers for the people and the efforts of the churches of Ukraine as they struggle to find unity, harmony and good governance. Ukraine's people respect the churches and these institutions can play a crucial peace-enabling role through dialogue and prayer.

On December 20th CEC that unite 115 Churhes in Europe issued official statement regarding situation in Ukaine.

As Christians from both Western and Eastern traditions prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus, this period has traditionally been one in which special efforts are made to attain peace and reconciliation in areas where there are conflicts.

The recent death of South African peace icon Nelson Mandela reminded humanity of how special efforts at reconciliation and unity can prevent a nation descending into internal conflict.

"The Conference of European Churches asks our Saviour, in this season when we celebrate his birth, to guide the churches and people of Ukraine," said the General Secretary of the Conference of European Churches, Rev. Dr Guy Liagre.

"We pray that Christ directs  them to the same conciliatory spirit and wisdom that gripped Nelson Mandela when his nation faced the potential of calamitous conflict twenty years ago."
