On March 3, 2024, in Washington, a meeting took place between the Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, and the bishops of the Permanent Synod with American diplomats who had served as ambassadors of the United States to Ukraine at different times.
According to the Information Department of the UGCC, the meeting was attended by: Roman Popadiuk, the first US Ambassador to Ukraine (1992–1993); William Taylor, US Ambassador to Ukraine (2006–2009); John Tefft, US Ambassador to Ukraine (2009–2013); Marie Yovanovitch, US Ambassador to Ukraine (2016–2019); William Courtney, former US Ambassador to Kazakhstan and Georgia, and Assistant to the President of the United States for Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia affairs.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the current relations between Ukraine and the US, Russian aggression against Ukraine and its consequences, the humanitarian situation in Ukraine, and other issues.
His Beatitude Sviatoslav noted that former US ambassadors to Ukraine, thanks to their deep understanding of the Ukrainian context gained during their diplomatic mission, are now authoritative experts on Ukraine to American society. "Previously, you served as US ambassadors to Ukraine, and now you are the voice of Ukraine in the US," said the Head of the UGCC.
The participants of the meeting expressed unanimous support for Ukraine, which has been resisting Russian aggression for 11 years, and assured of their readiness to continue promoting the development of Ukrainian-American relations and working towards achieving a just peace in Ukraine.
