Святослав_(Шевчук).jpgPatriarch Sviatoslav started his working visit to Wasington on 16 November. On the first day of the visit, he consecrated the place where the monument to Holodomor victims is to be constructed. The small triangular square is located not far from the Capitol and the Main Railway Station, at the crossroads of three streets. According to the agreement between USA and Ukraine, in 2008, the US government allocated the plot for the monument in the center of the city and defined the schedule of the construction, which is to be completed in 2013. According to the Director of the Ukrainian National Information Service on Public Relations based in Washington, Mykhailo Savkiv, “the construction of the monument in the center of Washington will be an extraordinary event not only for the Ukrainian community in USA but also for the whole international community, for everyone heading for the Capitol will now have to pass by the monument and be reminded of the genocide against the Ukrainian nation which is never to be repeated in the history of mankind.”

On the first day of the visit to Washington, the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) had a number of important meetings with congressmen and representatives of US State Department. On 17 November, the hierarch will continue to meet with officials and will have a meeting with Ambassador Plenipotentiary of Ukraine in USA, Oleksandr Motsyk. In the afternoon, the primate will give an interview to Myroslava Gongadze on the TV program “Chas-Time.” So reported the Information Department of UGCC.
