LVIV – Close to a thousand gifts will be distributed to Ukrainian women who live in the different regions of Ukraine by members of the Ukrainian Youth Association (SUM) in Ukraine for Mother’s Day, reports the Information Secretariat of SUM.

The action will be conducted with the support and assistance of the Organization of Ukrainian Women (Great Britain).

Its organizers wish to honor the woman-mother, with whose love and care for children creates the future of humanity.

“The Ukrainian Youth Association, together with the Organization of Ukrainian Women from Great Britain, decided to hold an action to greet the holders of the domestic hearth and show respect to such values as a family and motherhood,” says Anna Kolomiyets of SUM in Ukraine, the coordinator of the action.

This is not the first joint action of SUM and the Organization of Ukrainian Women. In 2009, due to the cooperation of the organizations, over 700 Easter baskets were given to the participants of the national-liberation movement.

This time youth will hand flowers and symbolic gifts to mothers with many children and women who actively participated in the struggle for Ukrainian independence. The action will take place from May 6 to 9 in the Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Donetsk, Rivno, Kherson, Chernihiv, Kirovohrad, Khmelnytskyj, and Kyiv regions, and in the city Kyiv.

This holiday has an old history. In celebrating the holiday we honor a woman in her three beings – a mother, the Mother of God, and the mother Ukraine.

Traditionally Mother’s Day falls on the second Sunday of May.

Background information: The Ukrainian Youth Association (SUM) is the one of oldest youth organizations and began as an underground organization which existed in Kyiv in 1925-1929. Today SUM exists and operates in 10 countries and is one of two the most educative Ukrainian youth organizations in the world. In modern Ukraine the revival of SUM began in 1989 and from this time organization conducts an educate activity among children and youth.

The method of SUM’s education counts over 60 years and is built on the system of national education, which was established by the well-known national teacher Hryhoriy Vashchenko (an honored member of SUM and author of “Educational Ideal”).

In its many years of existence, SUM educated many well-known figures of Ukraine and of the diaspora. The traditional summer camps for SUM members and socially unprotected children are a contribution to the development of a national educational system and the continuation of the long  tradition of SUM camping.
