UNESCO will consider the state of conservation of St. Sophia and Kyiv Caves Monastery

The delegation of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine takes part in the 39th session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO, held in Bonn (Germany).

According to NEWSru.ua, during the meeting at the press service of the Ministry of Culture, the Committee will discuss the state of conservation of World Heritage sites that are threatened and those included in the World Heritage List; these lists are to be updated.

The Ukrainian delegation will report on the state of conservation of Ukrainian monuments included in the World Heritage List, and their habitats - St Sophia, Kyiv Caves Monastery and historical center of the city.

In the room where the committee’s meetingtakes placethis year, a photo exhibition of the items of transboundary nominations of Ukraine and Poland “Wooden churches in the Carpathian region” was opened. Group of historically unique wooden churches on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2013, the report states.

At the meeting, the Committee will hear the report of the World Heritage Centre and advisory bodies, at the initiative of Director General a discussion“Convention on the Protection of the World Heritage: Thinking about the future” will be held. Also, the meeting will discuss the report of the Committee on the Strategy of training in the conservation of heritage and its implementation by the World Heritage Centre category 2, the Global Strategy for a representative, balanced and credible World Heritage List; periodic reports and final report on the results of the second cycle of periodic reporting for the European region and the action plan will be also heard.The second cycle of periodic reports for other regionswill be discussed along with the international assistance and budgetary planning for the biennium of 2016-2017.

The final meeting will elect the President, Vice-President and Rapporteur of the 40th session of the World Heritage Committee to be held in 2016, added the Ministry of Culture.

As reported previously, UNESCO noted that over the past years Ukraine ignored all recommendations for the protection of buffer zones of the Kyiv Caves and St. Sophia monasteries. The dismissed leadership of St Sophia National Reserve inflicted the damage on the state budget in the amount of USD 1 million.
