We are concerned about the treason charges against the former Head of State, - the OCU statement

23.12.2021, 10:13

The OCU shares the concern both in society and among Ukraine's international allies and partners regarding the accusation of the former head of state of treason.

Kyiv Metropolia of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine made a respective statement:

“For many years, our church, together with other churches and religious organizations in Ukraine, has consistently supported and continues to support justice reform. One of the key elements of this reform is the strict observance of the principles of independence and fairness of justice at all stages of its implementation – from the beginning of the investigation to the court verdict and its execution. The investigation and trial should take place without any political pressure or influence on them from other branches and centers of power, as defined by the Constitution and laws of Ukraine.

Unfortunately, these principles have been questioned more than once in the history of our state. Corruption, "telephone law", selective and politically motivated Justice have undermined and continue to undermine the authority of Ukraine, public confidence in the law enforcement and judicial systems. Such manifestations of evil were one of the reasons for the revolution of dignity when the Ukrainian people rebelled against systemic injustice and untruth on the part of those who were supposed to stand guard over law and order. All these shortcomings also become especially dangerous in the context of external hybrid aggression against our country.

Given all this, we share the concern both in society and among Ukraine's international allies and partners regarding the accusation of the former head of state of treason. At a time when society is divided on political grounds, and the enemy is accumulating troops at the borders and demonstrating readiness for an open offensive, in our opinion, everyone on whom the consideration of this issue depends should be especially vigilant, impartial, and remember the consequences of their decisions.

We are convinced that political disputes between those in power and those in opposition should remain in the political plane, as is typical of democratic European countries.

But from the Christian point of view, everyone should not forget the words of Scripture: "Do to others as you would have them do to you." (Luke 6:31) and "A false witness will not go unpunished, and whoever pours out lies will not go free." (Prov. 19:5)".
