At the end of August 2001 a delegation of 30 well-known and influential rabbis and leaders of important Progressive Jewish communities in the USA and also leaders and philanthropists from the World Union of Progressive Jewish Congregations traveled to Kyiv to learn about the status of Judaism in modern Ukraine.
The agency Blahovest-Info reports that the Religious Union for Progressive Jewish Congregations of Ukraine took the opportunity to acquaint its guests with various aspects of life in Ukraine today. Subjects covered were the life of Jewish communities in Kyiv and throughout Ukraine, the development of the Reform movement in Ukraine and its supporters and the status of freedom of religious expression and freedom of speech in Ukraine. The guests took part in the sabbath service Kabbalat Shabbat at the Kyiv congregation Ha-Tykva and laid flowers at the memorial to the victims of Nazism in Babyn Yar.
