On February 13, during an event at the Embassy of Italy to the Holy See on the occasion of the anniversary of the Lateran Accords, the Vatican Secretary of State commented on the initiatives and steps taken to find ways to end the war in Ukraine. He emphasized that for peace to be sustainable and lasting, it must be just.

This was reported by Vatican Radio.

According to the cardinal, there are glimmers of hope for the end of the war. Diplomacy is taking steps, including a recent telephone conversation between the presidents of the United States and Russia. Cardinal Parolin emphasized that “a just peace is needed” and that “there are many developments, many glimpses.”

“We hope,” he added, ”that they materialize, and we hope that we can achieve a peace that, in order to be sustainable, lasting, must be just, involve all the parties concerned, and take into account the principles of international law and the UN declaration. Everything that is proposed is useful, for we must put an end to this bloodshed.”

For his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, Antonio Tajani, insisted that, in any case, the EU and Kyiv should be involved in the negotiations.
