Assistant bishop of the RCC Diocese of Kamianets-Podilsky in Ukraine Jan Niemiec died in hospital in Lanzut (Poland) at 18.20, Kyiv time.

This is reported by the Catholic magazine CREDO.

Bishop Jan contracted coronavirus and was hospitalized in Kamianets - Podilsky. His condition was serious due to concomitant diseases, and he could only breathe with an oxygen mask. Last week, on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, the bishop was transferred to a hospital in Lancut using oxygen equipment. Eighty-five percent of his lungs were affected. Although in a few days the bishop's condition became better, today at 18.20 Kyiv time a circulatory arrest occurred.

Today, Bishop Jan Niemiec sent to another assistant bishop of the Diocese of Kamianets-Podilsky, Radoslav Zmitrovich, a final message: "The power of prayer. At Your Mercy. I bless you."

The hierarch's funeral will be announced later.

Background information

Jan Niemiec was born on March 14, 1958, in Rzeszow, Poland. In 1987, he was ordained a priest in Przemysl (Poland). Since 1993, he worked as a teacher at the Higher Theological Seminary of the Diocese of Kamianets-Podilsky (Ukraine), and in 2001-2006 he was its rector. Since 2006, he was assistant bishop of the Diocese of Kamianets-Podilsky of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine. The episcopal ordination took place on December 8, 2006, in Kamianets-Podilsky. The bishop's slogan was "Ecce Agnus Dei".
