Krishnas Around the World Celebrate the Birth of Lord Krishna

Krishna's birthday was also known as Krishna Janmashtami and falls sometime between mid-August to mid-September. On the day, devotees celebrate by singing devotional songs and dancing to the tune of bhajans. Apart from honoring the day with a special pooja, people also enjoy delicacies which are prepared especially for the festival.

According to official statistics, as of January 1, 2010,  there are 32 registered Krishna communities. Seven communities exist without registration.

Krishna Janmashtami is observed on the Ashtami tithi, the eighth day of the dark half or Krishna Paksha of the month of Shraavana in the Hindu calendar, when the Rohini Nakshatrais ascendant. The festival always falls between mid-August to mid-September in the Gregorian calendar. In 2009, for example, the festival was celebrated on August 14, while in 2010, the festival was celebrated on September 1.
