Roman Catholic bishops call on believers to join fasting and prayer for peace on October 27

23.10.2023, 10:22

In response to the call of the Holy Father, made during the general audience on October 18, we, as the Church in Ukraine, aim to observe October 27 as a Day of Repentance and Prayer with the intention of peace throughout the world.

This is stated in the Address of the Conference of Bishops of Ukraine on the occasion of the Day of Repentance and Prayer for Peace.

"We have been suffering from the war on Ukrainian soil for over 600 days, and now the residents of the Holy Land and other parts of the world are increasingly experiencing the destructive power of weapons and human hatred. Our land continues to bleed and moan in pain. Let us not lose hope but look to the Son of God, who quenched human hatred with His own Blood.

We encourage priests to celebrate the Holy Mass on this day, using the formula 'During War or Civil Disturbance,' and, where possible, to organize the adoration of the Most Holy Gifts and supplication services in parish communities. Let this day be an opportunity to draw closer to Christ and listen to His Word.

We also encourage, to the best of one's ability, fasting on bread and water on this day. Acts of mercy can also take various forms. Let this day be marked by deeds of mercy.

We entrust the cause of peace in Ukraine and the entire world to the Immaculate Heart of the Mother of God and grant our pastoral blessing for this time of intensified and fervent prayer."
