UGCC Mediation Initiative Praised By UNA-UNSO Political Organization

03.10.2002, 18:17

On 2 October 2002, the Lviv branch of the Ukrainian National Assembly and Ukrainian People’s Self-defense (UNA-UNSO) political organization sent an open letter to Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC). In this letter, the UNA-UNSO highly estimated the initiative of the UGCC to mediate in the dialogue between state authorities and opposition leaders in Ukraine.

The authors of the letter pointed out that there is no social confrontation in Ukraine and the solution of the conflict between the two parties is merely a political issue. According to them, this is the reason why even such a noble offer of the church has little chance of being effective. However, the UNA-UNSO leaders believe that while Ukraine is going through an uneasy period, the church can serve its people by warning the authorities against taking any violent steps.
