The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance (UINR) is urging people to sign an open letter to the international community, requesting the expulsion of Russia from UNESCO due to its ongoing attacks on cultural heritage sites in Ukraine.
This is stated in a post on the UINR's Facebook page.
"We urge the international community to take concerted action to end the unprovoked war against Ukraine. This includes addressing the killing and abduction of children, civilians, and military personnel, as well as the destruction of European cultural heritage in Ukraine. It is crucial to halt the systematic disregard for international law. Throughout the years of full-scale invasion, Russia has deliberately destroyed or damaged more than 1,600 cultural heritage sites in Ukraine. Putin's regime is engaged in a campaign to eliminate Ukraine," the statement reads.
The UINR urges everyone to sign the appeal, which will be sent to UNESCO and international partners in the coming days with the goal of expelling Russia from its membership.
The institution emphasizes that the ongoing attacks on Ukraine's cultural heritage — protected by UNESCO — are part of a deliberate policy by the Kremlin aimed at erasing Ukrainian national memory and cultural identity.
As reported by RISU, the attacks have also damaged architectural monuments of national significance, such as the Bernardine Monastery Complex.
