The United States Senate has recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as a genocide of the Ukrainian people, the embassy of Ukraine in Washington reports.

The United States Senate has recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as a genocide of the Ukrainian people, the embassy of Ukraine in Washington reports.

“The US Senate unanimously adopted a two-party resolution, which became the first ever legal act of the US Congress, by which the Holodomor of 1932-1933 was recognized as a genocide of the Ukrainian people. Thus, in particular, the operative part of the document includes the recognition by the Senate of the conclusions of the US Government Commission on the famine in Ukraine (dated 22 April 1988) that “Stalin and his entourage committed genocide against Ukrainians in 1932-1933.”

As the embassy emphasizes, the resolution condemns the violation of human rights committed by the USSR authorities against Ukrainians and its authors express their condolences to the victims of the Holodomor and call for the dissemination of information about the tragedy.

“We sincerely thank the US Senate and the main co-authors of the resolution – the Co-chairmen of the Senate's Ukrainian Caucus, Senators Robert Portman and Richard Durbin for their historic decision,” the embassy said.

Earlier, the document was approved by the US Foreign Relations Committee under the Senate.

A similar resolution was approved by the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives of Congress, and the document is currently awaiting consideration in the plenary session.
