Vice Rector of Ukrainian Catholic University Comments on December 1st Initiative

The key to spiritual purification is found in the system of values and ideas around which people are ready to unite and for the sake of which they are ready to sacrifice even their lives. The values are formed by the intelligence, but they are tested by the readiness to sacrifice some good things for their sake.

This opinion was expressed by the vice rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU), human rights campaigner, Myroslav Marynovych, in an article “Another Word About the 1st of December Initiative,” the press service of UCU reported.

Myroslav Marynovych stated that the true changes in the society begin with the spiritual transformation of people: “One can borrow wonderful models of parliamentarism and democracy, but these models will not work if the people in the state degrade spiritually.”

According to the human rights campaigner, the key to spiritual purification is not in having “a skillful leader or charismatic chief able to break the passiveness of the people and lead them. It is important to understand that our national organism has been affected by a cancer whose metastases penetrated all the dimensions of the society. If we do not come to our senses, we will have to undergo chemical treatment and irradiation which kill the affected cells, but do not guarantee the birth of healthy ones.”

According to Myroslav Marynovych, it is important not how many people sign the address of the initiative group “but how many of them will be bold enough to live according to the truth and in agreement with their conscience. We should decide that ourselves, we should inscribe it on our hearts and make it the law of our life,” reads the article.
