8th Youth Convention of Kyivan Patriarchate Held in Kyiv
KYIV — With the blessing of the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP), Patriarch Filaret, on February 6-7, 2010, the 8th All-Ukrainian Convention of Orthodox Youth was held in Kyiv. The event was attended by over 100 delegates from various regions of Ukraine. The theme of the convention was “Spiritual basis of patriotism.” The head of the Department “Sunday Schools and Social work” of the Synodal Department of the UOC-KP on matters of youth, Yana Horokhova, reported this story to RISU.
The participants made reports stressing the importance of patriotic education in the formation of the personality of a conscious citizen of the nation. They stressed the necessity to raise the patriotic spirit of the modern Ukrainian using heroic examples of our ancestors starting with Kyivan Rus. The reports were centered around the idea that patriotism is primarily love for one’s people and motherland, and the highest expression of patriotism is sacrifice for the common good.
After the liturgy conducted by Metropolita Dymytrii of Pereiaslav Khmelnytskyi and Boryspil, on February 7, the convention ended with a closing report by Dr. Dmytro Stepovyk, a professor of the Kyivan Orthodox Theological Academy.
