After earthquake Ukrainian Greek Catholics in Italy pray in tent
On Tuesday, June 26, Pope Benedict XVI visited the diocese of Carpi (region Emilia-Romagna in Italy). The earthquake that occurred there on May 19 brought disaster to the inhabitants, damaged many buildings, especially those that were built in previous centuries, reports the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church press service in Italy.
In the region of Emilia-Romagna two Ukrainian Greek Catholic communities also suffered from the earthquake. “Thanks to our faithful and pastor care we have been able to find and equip a space for holding services and can experience the hope and consolation of common prayer and the word,” said Ivan Havrysh, a parishioner.
In holy places Ferrara and Carpi, where Ukrainian faithful gathered for worship, after the shocks associated with the earthquake, there were large cracks and damages in these structures making them unsafe for use. “In Ferrari until the repair work is complete, the Greek Catholic faithful gather for worship in the parish of St. Rita Roman, and in Carpi Sunday service at first was celebrated in the church theater of the parish of God's Body, but because of lack of space, services are now held in a tent,” said Mr. Havrysh.
However, in an address to the Ukrainian faithful affected, Fr. Oleksandr Sapunko of one of the Ukrainian parishes, said: “The walls of our churches may have suffered, but our faith and Sunday Liturgy are not tied to them but to the risen and living God! So until renovation is complete, we will pray, like the Italian faithful, in other suitable places.”
