Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti: The UGCC remains a source of hope for its people
In his address to the bishops, Cardinal Gugerotti expressed deep gratitude for the UGCC’s unwavering service amid the ongoing war and numerous hardships: “The main message is gratitude — for what you do, for who you are, for the courage you instill in people, in priests, their families, and in all the faithful. Thank you for always being with the people and for remaining their only source of hope.” This was reported by the UGCC Department for Information.
Cardinal Gugerotti reaffirmed the Holy See’s commitment to supporting the Church in Ukraine: “We are ready to make every effort to assist you in all your needs, with the limited means at our disposal.”
He emphasized the essential role Eastern Catholic Churches play in preserving the Christian heritage and voiced concern over the threats they face — from war and religious fundamentalism to the challenges of mass migration and life in the diaspora.
As RISU reported, the central theme of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church is focused on pastoral care for families during wartime. The working sessions will begin on June 30 and continue until July 10 at the Ukrainian Pontifical College of St. Josaphat in Rome.
Forty-six bishops from Ukraine, as well as from Western and Central Europe, North and South America, and Australia, gathered in Rome for the 2025 Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. The group includes 33 ruling bishops, eight auxiliary bishops, and four emeritus bishops.
