On December 16, the website of the Conference of European Churches published the following statement: “The Conference of European Churches (CEC) has issued a heartfelt plea for a Christmas ceasefire in Ukraine, urging all parties to embrace this season of hope and humanity." The call emerged as a direct outcome of CEC's recent consultation on “just peace,” held in Warsaw from 9-11 December 2024.

This was reported by Religion in Ukraine.

The European Ecumenical Organization, which represents 115 member churches across Europe, called on Russia to respect Christmas by ending the violence.

A key recommendation of the consultation included a demand for a prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine based on the “all for all” formula, emphasizing the importance of humanitarian gestures in the conflict.

Following the initiative of Pope Francis announced on December 8 for a ceasefire on all war fronts, the CEC has reinforced its commitment to peacebuilding. Commenting on the message, CEC President, His Eminence Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain said: “The child in the manger, Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, invites everyone to accept the peace offered by God in Bethlehem. All humanity is invited.”

The CEC consultation in Warsaw brought together leaders of various Ukrainian churches who shared reports and testimonies, emphasizing the urgency of action for peace. Participants stressed that the message of Christmas should transcend the conflict, offering an opportunity for dialogue, reconciliation and hope.
