Several ancient monasteries in a remote monastic community in northern Greece have been damaged by a series of earthquakes.

This was reported by the Greek authorities on Friday, according to European Pravda, citing AP.

An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck Mount Athos on June 7, followed by a series of underground and surface tremors that continued until June 13.

These underground tremors caused significant cracks in the dome of the Xenophontos Monastery, which was built at the end of the 10th century, and damaged religious frescoes at this site as well as at several others, according to the Ministry of Culture.

Mount Athos is one of the most important religious sites for Orthodox Christians and is often referred to as the Holy Mountain. It is a semi-autonomous monastic republic consisting of 20 Orthodox monasteries.

The self-governing community adheres to strict traditions under Greek sovereignty, including a ban on women entering the territory.

“We are fully aware of the immense archaeological, historical, and spiritual significance of Mount Athos, and we assure you that all damage will be repaired in accordance with scientific and ethical standards,” said Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni.

Restoration work, which will include structural reinforcement and repair of artworks, will be expanded and accelerated, Mendoni added.

A more detailed assessment of the damage is expected next week, according to the Ministry of Culture.
