A joint session was held of the Sumy Regional State Administration commission to promote the observance of legislation on freedom of conscience and religious organizations, the regional council of churches and religious organizations, the regional commission for the protection of public morals. The event was chaired by Deputy Chairman of the Governor Ihor Yahovdyka.
The main issue discussed was the interdenominational conflict between the Church of Grace, which is part of the Ukrainian Union of Evangelical Christians-Baptists, and the Sumy Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate).
Earlier, the Sumy Baptists accused the authorities and UOC-MP representatives of hindering the holding of an event for children.
The authorities insist that the Baptists violated the rights of parents who didn’t want their children to participate in talks on Christian ethics.
In particular, Ihor Yahovdyk said: "The children had no alternative. If ‘Happy Playgrounds’ were organized elsewhere, there wouldn’t have been a conflict.”
In his turn, the chair of the Sumy Regional Association of Evangelical Christian Baptist Churches Volodymyr Savchenko said that on the playgrounds no one is bothering anyone else and urged the authorities to verify this for themselves. He also expressed outrage that Fr. Maksym Denysenko of the UOC-MP called Baptists sectarians, and the secretary of the Sumy City Council and the chair of the commission to promote the observance of legislation on freedom of conscience and religious organizations Oleksii Movchan said that for as long as he heads the commission, he will not allow sectarians to held their events.
Representative of the UOC-MP secretary of the Sumy Eparchy Fr. Heorhii Taraban made no comment on the conflict but called all denominations and authorities to the negotiating table to agree on the fundamental question.
At the meeting it was agreed on to develop and adopt at the next meeting of the City Commission a methodology for religious organizations for organizing recreation for childreIn Sumy, denominations agree to sit at negotiating table
