International scientific conference in Kyiv to discuss the Soviet repressive anti-church policy in Ukraine
On March 17, 2016, Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University will host the international scientific conference “The power of faith against the abuse of power: the Greek Catholics of Central and Eastern Europe in the context of persecution by totalitarian regimes after World War II.”
The conference was organized to commemorate the sad anniversary of the 70th anniversary of the so-called Lviv Council (March 8-10, 1946), which officially proclaimed the “reunification” of the Greek Catholic Galician metropolis with the Russian Orthodox Church.
The plenary sessions will discuss the forms and methods of the anti-church repressive policy of the Soviet power in Ukraine and patterns and characteristics of its implementation in neighboring countries, their experience of opposing totalitarian pressure. Participants of the final round table will be invited to provide historical and legal assessment of the actions of the authorities and their secret police and discuss the lessons and challenges of the current and future cooperation between the Church, state and civil society and problems of harmonizing inter-faith relations.
The conference will bring together the leading scientists from Ukraine, Germany, Poland, Russia, Slovakia and Italy, representatives of state and church bodies.
Organizers: Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, Ukrainian Catholic University.
Venue: Hall of the Academic Council of Shevchenko Kyiv University in the spaces of the main (“red”) building on Volodymyrska street 60.
