EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas and Pope Francis met and discussed the war in Ukraine and the need for a just peace.

Kaja Kallas announced this on February 10 on her page on the X network.

“I was honoured to meet His Holiness Pontiff Francis,” she wrote. “We discussed Russia’s war in Ukraine and the need for a just and lasting peace that ensures Ukraine’s future.”

The head of European diplomacy did not provide further details of the meeting but thanked His Holiness “for his strong leadership in protecting the most vulnerable and defending human dignity.”

During his sermon on February 9, Pope Francis once again called for peace in conflict zones around the world, including Ukraine.

“Brothers and sisters! Let us pray for peace in tormented Ukraine, Palestine, Israel and throughout the Middle East, Myanmar, Kivu (Democratic Republic of Congo), and Sudan. Let the weapons be silent everywhere, and let the cry of the peoples who are asking for peace be heard!” Said the pontiff.

Also, during the Jubilee Mass for the Armed Forces, Police and Security Personnel, the pontiff called for the use of the armed forces only for legitimate defense.

“This armed service is to be exercised only in self-defence, never to impose domination over other nations, always observing international conventions on conflict and, first and foremost, with sacred respect for life and creation,” Francis stated.

The Pope has consistently called for a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine but has also repeatedly expressed views that many have considered controversial.
