Kirill declines to travel to Georgia for Patriarch Ilia's funeral

The Russian Orthodox Church will be represented at the funeral of Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II (Gudushauri-Shioashvili) of All Georgia by Metropolitan Veniamin (Tupieka), the Exarch of Belarus. He will travel to Tbilisi on behalf of Patriarch Kirill Gundyaev of Moscow and All Russia.
This was reported by Christians Against War.
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew is expected to attend the funeral of Ilia II in person. This is the reason why the head of the Russian Orthodox Church has declined to visit Tbilisi. In 2018, Moscow announced that it was breaking off Eucharistic communion with the Patriarchate of Constantinople after the decision was made to grant autocephaly to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
